What is a UTI?
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common condition that can affect anyone but are more prevalent in women. UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, leading to discomfort, pain, and frequent urination. At Heald Green Pharmacy, we offer expert advice and effective treatments to help manage and prevent UTIs.
What Causes UTIs?
UTIs are usually caused by bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli), which naturally live in the digestive system but can enter the urinary tract. Common causes include:
–> Poor Hygiene – Not wiping properly after using the toilet or using contaminated hands.
–> Holding Urine for Too Long – This allows bacteria to multiply in the bladder.
–> Sexual Activity – Can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of infection.
–> Dehydration – Not drinking enough water can reduce urination, allowing bacteria to grow.
–> Menopause – Hormonal changes can make women more susceptible to infections.
–> Use of Catheters – Long-term catheter use can increase the risk of infection.
UTI Symptoms
Common symptoms of UTIs include:
–> A burning sensation when urinating.
–> Frequent and urgent need to urinate.
–> Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine.
–> Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen.
–> Feeling tired or unwell.
–> Fever or chills in more severe cases.
UTI Treatments Available
At Heald Green Pharmacy, we provide various treatments to help relieve UTI symptoms and clear the infection.
Antibiotic Treatments
–> Trimethoprim – Commonly prescribed to treat mild UTIs.
–> Nitrofurantoin – Effective for bladder infections and frequently used in treatment. You will usually need to take nitrofurantoin for 3 to 7 days if you are taking it to treat a urinary tract infection.
–> Fosfomycin – A single-dose antibiotic for uncomplicated infections.
These antibiotics help eliminate the bacteria causing the infection, and symptoms usually improve within a few days of starting treatment.
Over-the-Counter Relief
–> Painkillers (Paracetamol or Ibuprofen) – Help reduce pain and fever.
–> Cystitis Sachets – Contain sodium citrate or potassium citrate to help neutralise the acidity of urine, relieving discomfort.
–> Cranberry Supplements – May help reduce bacterial adhesion in the urinary tract, though they are not a replacement for medical treatment.
Preventing UTIs
Taking steps to prevent UTIs can help reduce the risk of recurring infections:
–> Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria.
–> Urinate after sex to remove bacteria from the urinary tract.
–> Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
–> Avoid holding in urine for extended periods.
–> Wear loose-fitting underwear and cotton fabrics to keep the area dry.
–> Avoid excessive use of perfumed soaps or feminine hygiene products that may irritate the area.
When to Seek Medical Advice
Most UTIs are mild and can be treated with antibiotics, but you should seek medical attention if:
–> Your symptoms do not improve after taking antibiotics.
–> You experience severe pain, fever, or vomiting.
–> You have recurrent UTIs that affect your daily life.
–> You are pregnant or have an underlying condition such as diabetes or kidney disease.
