Obesity and Weight Management
Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for overall well-being, but for many, losing weight can be challenging. At Heald Green Pharmacy, we offer expert advice, support, and effective treatments to help you achieve your weight loss goals safely and sustainably.
Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body mass index (BMI) is the most widely used method for assessing whether your weight is within a healthy range for your height. You can use the NHS BMI healthy weight calculator to determine your score.
For most adults, a BMI of:
–> 18.5 to 24.9 – Healthy weight
–> 25 to 29.9 – Overweight
–> 30 to 39.9 – Obese
–> 40 or above – Severely obese
While BMI is a useful indicator of health, it does not distinguish between muscle and fat. For individuals with very muscular bodies, waist circumference can provide a better measure of excess fat. Generally, men with a waist size greater than 94 cm and women with a waist size greater than 80 cm are at higher risk of obesity-related health conditions.
Risks of Obesity
Carrying excess weight can significantly increase the risk of developing serious health conditions, including:
–> Type 2 diabetes
–> Coronary heart disease
–> Stroke
–> Certain cancers, such as breast and bowel cancer
–> Joint pain and mobility issues
–> Psychological effects, including low self-esteem and depression
Causes of Obesity
Obesity occurs when you consume more calories than you burn through daily activity and exercise. This excess energy is stored in the body as fat. Key contributing factors include:
–> High-calorie diets – Consuming large amounts of processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats.
–> Lack of physical activity – A sedentary lifestyle leads to weight gain.
–> Genetics and medical conditions – Certain conditions, such as an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), can contribute to weight gain.
–> Stress and emotional factors – Overeating due to stress, boredom, or emotional distress.
Effective Weight Loss Strategies
Losing weight requires a combination of healthy eating, increased physical activity, and behavioural changes. Building sustainable habits is key to long-term success:
–> Adopt a calorie-controlled diet – Reduce portion sizes and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.
–> Increase physical activity – Engage in moderate exercise such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling for at least 150 to 300 minutes per week.
–> Track progress – Use a fitness tracker or app to monitor steps, calories, and exercise routines.
–> Eat slowly and mindfully – Avoid overeating by recognising hunger and fullness cues.
–> Seek support – Join a local weight loss group or involve family and friends in your journey.
Weight Loss Treatments Available
For those struggling to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, medical treatments can help support weight loss efforts.
Prescription Medications
–> Saxenda (Liraglutide) – An injectable weight loss treatment that helps reduce appetite and calorie intake.
–> Orlistat (Alli or Xenical) – Works by reducing fat absorption in the body, aiding weight loss when combined with a low-fat diet.
Additional Support Options
–> Behavioural therapy – Counselling or support groups can help address emotional eating habits.
–> Alternative therapies – Some individuals find hypnotherapy or acupuncture beneficial in weight loss management.
